Thanksgiving Day 1 of 2
So I need a nap again, but I'm gonna share some highlights from Thanksgiving Day in Dhaka. In no particular order.
- Fabric Shopping - I probably bought too much but in the middle of cooking (2 turkeys were fried + multiple pies, dressing, cornbread…) we made a pitstop for about 2 hours to go find fabric. I have fabric for three shalwar khameez's and two tops... :) Will I have time to have them made? That's the question. If not I'll have to take the fabric home and go to Global Market to see if I can find a tailor.
- Conversations - At dinner I spoke to several people I'd never met before. I spoke to a woman who works to help women who have been sex trafficked get out, another who's part of an NGO to help people who've been scammed in the comment scheme known as pig butchery. I also met health officer who gave the most glowing recommendation of Nepal and it's scenery! I'd love to visit but unfortunately won't be able to swing it this trip.
- Dancing - Yes I met a latin dance instructor at Thanksgiving dinner. After we'd eaten and talked a while we danced to some bachata and salsa! Who'd have guessed in Bangladesh I'd end up latin dancing with a Bangladeshi instructor? Particularly because I haven't really heard locals playing music or seen them dancing, it was unexpected. I do think Bangladeshi folk music is more popular here.
- Food - We had a traditional Thanksgiving meal of turkey, cranberry sauce, sweet potato casserole, greens, cornbread, dressing, and mac & cheese! In addition, the sangria and ice cream were really tasty additions. There was more than enough and all presented beautifully.
- Friends & Family - Thanksgiving here truly felt like home, from the kinds of food we at to the camaraderie amongst the guests. I'm thankful for the hosts who opened up their homes for the gathering and prepared the food & atmosphere for us all to enjoy.
Later today we'll be celebrating Thanksgiving part 2 of 2. I am supposed to make some more rolls... I need to get started soon so that the bread has time to rise.... maybe I'll nap during the 1st rise. :)
