Hauling Dirt
This morning our day started at 5:30 AM! By 11AM we’d just finished moving dirt — literally that was our job on the site. Moving dirt from one pile to hole about 50 feet away to surround a cement platform with a well in the middle. Really quite fulfilling though — and productive. There’s definitely a satisfaction that comes from completing a manual job and, on a scientific level, there are probably endorphins produced too. A day of coding is satisfying but not in the same way. Although I have been known to do a happy dance after building a new feature or sigh with relief after a good quality refactor. But still, when I get home, I’ll probably start a garden even though I’m kinda late to the game this year.
After all the exertion in the morning, I was starving by lunch. I had a tasty lunch with a ton of vegetables; I always miss my veggies when traveling.
It rained for most of the early afternoon so after an extended lunch just talking and catching up, we walked to the national theater only to discover the last English tour had already passed! So we tried the Patrimonio Cultural Center only to discover it was being renovated. So we resorted to shopping in the plaza in the city center. This message comes to you from the Nike store! I’m literally blogging while my cousins talk about Dunks, Blazers, Jordan 4s in military blue and how they look better on kids… I have no idea… 🤷🏾♀️ lol
After a chill afternoon of walking we headed back to Maximo to plan the week and confirm excursions going forward. We caught up with one of our 6 - 8 (I actually don’t know how many) housemates who are also volunteering this week.
Back at our homestay we had a tasty family-style dinner at a table with 10 people. Lots of “could you please pass the beans and rice, por favor?” Now it’s only 8:35 PM. I’ve already showered and am so ready for bed. 🥱 Buenas Noches!
