Boxing Day

Today the driving and stops continued. Boxing Day is traditionally the day where visitors stop by to meet family and friends after Christmas. We were expecting one cousin coming up from Golden Grove only to find out she was deferred due to an accident. A car turning out from the road behind a truck hit them! They damaged the axle in the process and the car was no longer steerable! Thankfully they were all OK but it did make for another mini journey down to the Welldad police station where they filed a report.

Around 12ish we leave to meet them and rush out to beat the bridge over the Bernice river. If we catch the bridge while open it could easily add an hour to the trip waiting in lines of traffic waiting for the bridge to close. We make it over, and after about an hour reach the police station.

We scoop them up and make a couple stops along the way back. We stopped at two friend, had a drink and some black cake and almost got offered some pepperpot before jetted to the next place. This is the area near where I used to live as a child in Overwagt and my father worked as an engineer. We visited the pump station that was one of Daddy’s first projects. 40 years later all appeared to be well!

Here’s the pump station below.

Then we swung by the house we used to live across the road. The house though inhabited, looked untouched and not in a good way. Rusted and in need of a paint job. Nevertheless though it was nice to see. My cousin said she remembered a time visiting us and my shouting from the step “Mommy cut off all mi hair!” 😩 I guess I knew she cut my hair at one point as a child lol but I don’t know the story behind it.

The rest of the day was spent receiving visitors at home, on video calls with relatives, catching up and listening to one story after the next about this cousin and the next and she fadda and he mudda now… and this and that! It’s always eventful just listening, laughing and learning —cuz you know I don’t know all these people! Cricket on in the background while snacking on puhlourie, sour and mango 🥭. So good! I’ve had pepperpot twice already and curry mutton and pouri. I got some tamarind jam from another cousin who stopped by… tangy goodness and not too sweet! Definitely makes me want to go home and resume Guyanese Cooking Sundays… if you know you know! 😋
